Jonathan W. Brugger, MD, MBA

Jonathan Brugger, MD is a board certified ophthalmologist who completed a two-year vitreoretinal surgical fellowship at the esteemed Charles Retina Institute, training with the leader of modern-day vitreoretinal surgery—Steve Charles, MD.

Dr. Brugger is a native of Southwest Florida and attended Bradenton Christian High School. He completed his Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences and Biomedical Physics from the University of South Florida in 2004. Thereafter, he earned his medical degree from SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY followed by an internship at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, VA. Dr. Brugger went on to do his residency at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary in New York City, a top ranked ophthalmology program in the country. 

A ten-year Navy Veteran, Dr. Brugger served as a comprehensive ophthalmologist at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth where he performed cataract and refractive surgery (PRK and LASIK) and implemented operational efficiencies as the Director of Surgical Logistics. During his military medical career, he was trained as a U.S. Navy Diver and Diving Medical Officer at the Navy Experimental Diving Unit in Panama City, FL. He practiced hyperbaric and general medicine for SEALs, EOD, submariners, and divers. While serving as a medical officer, he also earned his M.B.A. from Liberty University.

    CHARLES RETINA INSTITUTE (Memphis, TN)

    Dr. Brugger trained with the father of modern day vitreoretinal surgery, Steve Charles. There he learned the most advanced techniques to diagnose and treat vitreoretinal diseases and performed over 1,200 surgeries.

    NEW YORK EYE & EAR INFIRMARY (New York, NY)

    Top 10 Ranked NYEE was an amazing opportunity for Dr. Brugger to treat all types and severity of ocular disease. There was never a dull moment when serving all of New York City in NYEE’s Eye Emergency Department.

    SUNY Upstate Medical University (Syracuse, NY)

    Originally from Pennsylvania, after undergrad, Dr. Brugger found himself in familiar territory where he went into medical school thinking he was going to be a hand surgeon.
